Washington, DC – Congressman John Culberson (TX-07) included language in the Water Infrastructure Improvements for the Nation (WIIN) Act that expedites Project Brays, a major flood mitigation project in Houston.

“Many families and business owners along the Brays Bayou have experienced the devastation of watching their homes and businesses flood, not once, but twice, in the last two years. My language in the WIIN Act will direct the Army Corps of Engineers to expedite completion of Project Brays to remove thousands of homes and businesses from the hundred year floodplain,” Representative Culberson said.

“It is vital that this project be completed as quickly as possible to limit any future damage during severe weather events. Flood control is an essential part of protecting our quality of life in Houston, and I will continue to work with the Army Corps of Engineers, State and local officials, and my colleagues in Congress, to develop strategic long-term solutions to prevent future flood damage.

“I’d like to thank my colleagues in the House for supporting this important legislation that will greatly improve the quality of life for those impacted by flooding. I’d also like to express my gratitude to Congressman Al Green, whose support has helped to ensure the success of this crucial language that will benefit so many Houstonians.”

Representative Culberson’s amendment was originally adopted during House consideration of the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA). The Senate passed a different version of WRDA earlier this year. The WIIN Act is the result of bicameral negotiations.
