WASHINGTON — U.S. Rep. Ed Perlmutter of Colorado won’t be pursuing a last-minute challenge to Donald Trump’s victory after support for the idea failed to materialize in the Senate, House aides said.

Perlmutter and other House Democrats this week raised the possibility of filing an objection to Trump’s win when Congress meets Friday to certify the results of the Nov. 8 election. But to do so, they needed the support of at least one U.S. senator — which his office said didn’t happen.

While the last-ditch effort had little chance of stopping the Republican president-elect from taking over the White House on Jan. 20, Perlmutter said in a statement that he feels compelled to question Trump’s 304-227 win over Hillary Clinton in the Electoral College because of concerns of Russian interference during last year’s campaign — specifically cyberattacks by its agents against the Democratic party.

“This action by a foreign nation was unprecedented, violated our Constitution and undermined the founding pillars of American liberty and democracy,” Perlmutter said. “This is not about trying to stop Donald Trump from becoming President. This is about the fact that our liberty, freedom and democracy were compromised by Russia’s intrusion into America’s election.”
