“Joy is the true gift of Christmas, not the expensive gifts that call for time and money…Let us pray that this presence of the liberating joy of God shines forth in our lives.” – Pope Benedict XVI

Christmas is just around the corner which means twinkling lights are bright throughout our communities and presents are being wrapped to set out around the tree on Christmas Eve.

Each season is unique in itself, but there is truly something special about the spirit of Christmas. There is no other time when generosity is at such an all-time high. This time of year, giving back is more than just a saying, it is a time of year when people reach out in the hope of bringing joy to individuals in need. Christmas has the unique ability to bring people together. Whether that is spending time with individuals who don’t have nearby friends and family members to be together with for the holidays or by participating in a coordinated effort within your communities. Giving back can be simply organizing a local service activity in your community or donating any spare toys, clothes, or canned food to a local drive. And, if you find yourself with a few hours to spare, volunteers are always appreciated at local homeless shelters. These simple yet effective acts of charity may not seem like much to some, but it means the world to others.

The 3rd District is home to the most kind and supportive individuals and I know if we all work together, we can make our communities even better.

During this holiday season, I hope you reflect on the year and recount all the joy this past year has brought you and your family. Let us also all remember the message of peace and goodwill and we take the time to cherish the memories that are made with our loved ones and friends.

Lastly, I ask that you take a moment to say a special prayer for the thousands of men and women in uniform who are far from home this holiday season. On behalf of myself, my family, and my staff, I want to wish you a joyous  and peaceful Christmas season. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all!
