Rep. Louie Gohmert, R-Texas, said Wednesday morning that Democrats like Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer oppose President-elect Trump's endless tweeting because they'd rather have people read the left-leaning press.

Schumer used his opening-day speech in the Senate Tuesday to say a "Twitter presidency" is a bad idea.

"Making America great again requires more than 140 characters per issue," Schumer said. "With all due respect, America cannot afford a Twitter presidency."

"Of course he wants Trump to get off Twitter, because he wants the public to hear nothing but the New York Times," Gohmert shot back Wednesday on Fox News.

The exchange is one that's likely to repeat itself over and over again. Trump's camp has promised that Trump would continue to tweet even after he takes office on Jan. 20.

Schumer argued Tuesday that the issues facing the nation require a more careful, nuanced discussion than the kind of exchange that's possible on Twitter.

"We have real challenges and real needs … these are complex and serve careful consideration and action. We cannot just tweet them away," he said.
