Jobs and the Economy

Millions of Americans are still out of work. Too many North Carolina families and small businesses are struggling to make ends meet. The Obama economic agenda – from Obamacare to “Stimulus” to restrictions on American energy and unprecedented debt – is a failure; today’s stagnant economic recovery is proof.

When American workers and small businesses look to Washington for help, they aren’t asking for more micromanagement, a federal health care takeover or a continuation of failed policies. They are asking for a leaner more responsive government that works for them. That is why I authored the Supporting Knowledge and Investing in Lifelong Skills Act or the SKILLS Act. This important legislation was signed into law on July 22, 2014 and reforms our nation’s broken job training system by streamlining 35 duplicative federal workforce development programs and creates a single Workforce Investment Fund to serve employers, workers and job seekers. The SKILLS Act also encourages these programs to focus on in-demand jobs and industries so that participants will be able to succeed in the workplace upon completion and ensures that funds are spent directly on services rather than administration and bureaucrats.

Reforming our laws, tax code and regulations to encourage job growth and strengthen America’s standing in the global economy are among my top priorities in the 114th Congress and are and things House Republicans are happy to help the President pursue. Working families, small business job creators and unemployed North Carolinians are at the forefront of my mind as I work on these issues in Congress.
