Statement by Congressman Dan Kildee on Gov. Snyder Signing Flint Water Crisis Bill

January 6, 2017

Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05) issued the following statement today after Governor Rick Snyder signed H.B. 5120:

“I am pleased to see the Governor sign this common sense piece of legislation into law to help prevent another water crisis from happening elsewhere. Hopefully today’s action will inspire a greater sense of urgency for both the Governor and the Michigan Legislature to pass additional state aid for the ongoing emergency in my hometown. Congress has acted on federal aid and now the State of Michigan, who created this man-made crisis, needs to step up to do more to help Flint families. This crisis is not over.”

At the federal level, Congressman Kildee and Congressman Fred Upton (MI-06) introduced a similar bipartisan bill, the Kildee-Upton bill, to ensure another Flint tragedy never happens again. Their bill, which recently was signed into law by President Barack Obama, strengthen requirements to have the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency notify the public within 24 hours when concentrations of lead in drinking water are above federal requirements.
