Oversight Letters
One of the most important functions of Congress is its oversight power of the Executive Branch. I am a regular author or signatory of letters from Members of Congress to various governmental agencies requesting clarification, additional information, or changes to their policies and procedures. Letters that I have led or signed are listed below: October 20, 2015: Rep. October 6, 2014: Rep. John Culberson signed a letter to Marilyn Tavenner, Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, urging CMS to remove restrictions on skin substitutes. June 10, 2014: Congressman Culberson joined with other members of the Texas delegation in urging the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to keep the Freeport LNG terminal on schedule. May 13, 2014: Rep. Culberson signed on to a letter to the Department of Veterans Affairs Inspector General to express our concern over recent allegations that employees at the North Central Federal Clinic in San Antonio, Texas, as well as the Austin Veterans Affairs Outpatient Clinic and the Waco Veterans Affairs Medical Center, manipulated medical appointment data in order to conceal long wait times for veterans seeking care. March 5, 2014: Rep. John Culberson (TX-07) joined a bipartisan group of Members of Congress in sending a letter to President Obama urging him to ensure that Iran ends its nuclear program. January 30, 2014: Rep. Culberson signed on to a letter to House Ways and Means Chair Dave Camp and Ranking Member Levin that requests an extension of the state and local sales tax deduction for Texas tax payers. More than 20% of our country's population resides in state's without an income tax; instead, those states have opted to fund their state government with substantial sales tax revenue. Since residents of these states cannon claim a deduction for state income tax this deduction ensures that Texans are not punished for their state's preferred tax structure. Culberson signed on to a letter to Speaker Boehner, led by Congressman Joe Pitts, urging the Speaker to include provisions ending taxpayer-funded abortions as part of a government-funding plan. September 20, 2013: Rep. Culberson joined the Texas Republican delegation in urging conservative Senators to join them in voting to keep the government open and defund Obamacare. September 11, 2013: Rep. Culberson joined a letter to the Department Of Health and Human Services to address the abuse of taxpayer money to promote Obamacare exchanges. August 28, 2013: Rep. June 24, 2013: Rep. Culberson signed on to a letter to President Obama urging him to work with the government on Tanzania to ensure it upholds the rule of law and due process as it relates to land concessions to outside investors. Culberson signed a letter from the Republican Study Committee (RSC) to President Obama supporting Speaker Boehner’s recent comments on raising the nation’s debt ceiling, in which he stated that spending cuts and reforms must be greater than the amount of the debt limit increase. Michael Burgess, MD on a letter to the acting CMS Administrator regarding the transition to a new contractor for the Medicare region that includes Texas.
