Congressional Art Competition

Each year, the U.S. House of Representatives sponsors a nation-wide high school arts competition. The “Artistic Discovery Contest” is an opportunity to recognize and encourage artistic talent in Utah and the nation.

For Utah’s 3rd Congressional District, the annual congressional art competition is held in conjunction with the Utah All-State High School Art Show which is hosted by the Springville Museum of Art. Each year our office presents six awards (one first place and five honorable mentions). All artwork entered into the show by artists living in the 3rd congressional district will be considered for one of these awards. However, to be considered for the first place award, the artwork must meet ALL of the following criteria:

Artwork must be an original concept, two dimensional and no larger than 28” x 28” (the measurement should allow for framing) and 4” in depth.

Methods allowed:

Paintings – including oil, acrylics and watercolor
Drawings – including pastels, colored pencil, pencil, charcoal, ink and markers

(Charcoal and pastel drawings should be fixed.)

Collages – must be two dimensional
Prints – including lithographs, silkscreens, monotypes, woodcuts, block prints and intaglio methods.
Mixed Media – use of more than two mediums such as pencil, ink, watercolor, etc.

All entries must be original in concept, design and execution and may not violate any U.S. copyright laws. Any entry that has been copied from an existing photo or image (including a painting, graphic or advertisement) that was created by someone other than the student is a violation of the competition rules and will not be accepted. Work entered must be in the original medium (that is, not a scanned reproduction of a painting or drawing).

The first place award winning piece from each congressional district across the United States is displayed for one year in the Cannon Tunnel of the U.S. Capitol where it is seen by hundreds of visitors each day. The student is invited, along with one guest, to the unveiling of the national exhibit and a reception in Washington, D.C., and is provided two round-trip airline tickets to attend the event (normally in June).

Artwork should be submitted to the Utah All-State High School Art Show through art teachers at high/private/charter schools. Home-schooled children should contact the museum directly. The deadline to submit art for the All-State Art Show is normally in January of each year.
