The U.S. Department of State expects a surge in passport applications this year and is encouraging anyone in need of a new passport or renewing an expiring passport to apply early. The department expects 17 million applications this year and 21 million the next. Current processing times for the Atlanta Passport Office is 6 weeks for routine service and 3 weeks for expedited service. If a passport is needed in 2 weeks or less, you will now be required to obtain an appointment at the Atlanta Passport Agency and go directly to the agency.
