Mac's thoughts on the President's latest gun control actions

The Second Amendment to the Constitution reads: “A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”  Our Founding Fathers considered this right important enough to make it a prominent part of our Constitution, and regarded the right to keep and bear arms a personal, fundamental right.

When our rights were challenged by the Supreme Court in the D.C. v. Heller case, I joined a bipartisan group of colleagues to argue in an amicus brief that the Washington, D.C. gun ban was unconstitutional.  The Supreme Court sided with our stance and determined that the right to bear arms is an individual right.  This ruling represented a considerable victory for our freedom, although much work is still required to ensure that our rights are protected.  Most recently, I signed a similar amicus brief urging the Supreme Court to overturn the Chicago gun ban challenged in McDonald v. Chicago.

I have never supported efforts to remove firearms from the hands of law-abiding citizens and believe attempts to do so only aids those who violate our laws and prey on society.  Those who commit gun violence break several laws in carrying out their crimes.  One more law – whether it is a universal background check or a ban on certain types of weapons – will not stop them.  Most guns used in the commission of a crime are obtained illegally in the first place.  While it is tempting for some to pin their hopes on a quick legislative answer to crime and violence, I believe more gun control would be a mistake and that we must look deeper inside our society for the real causes and the real answers.

I will continue to push for legislation that will protect the Second Amendment rights of all of our citizens and oppose any attempts to infringe on those rights.
