We must do everything in our power to hold those responsible for terrorist acts on our soil accountable. If a nation plays any role in these activities, they cannot be immune from the law. The families of 9/11 victims deserve the opportunity to be heard in court, and this veto override provides them that opportunity.

Rep. Barton (R-Ennis) released the following statement on the successful veto override of the Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act (JASTA). JASTA allows families of victims on terrorism to sue foreign governments that may be involved. The bill had previously passed both the House and Senate by voice vote. Today the Senate voted to override the President’s veto by a vote of 97-1 and the House by a vote of 348-77.

“We must do everything in our power to hold those responsible for terrorist acts on our soil accountable. If a nation plays any role in these activities, they cannot be immune from the law. The families of 9/11 victims deserve the opportunity to be heard in court, and this veto override provides them that opportunity.”

Barton continued, “Better late than never,” on this being the first successful veto override for President Obama.
