About Washington's 3rd District

Washington’s third congressional district covers the Southwest Corner of the state.  Formed after the 1900 U.S. Census, Jaime is the 14th Member of Congress to represent the district.  Geographically, the 3rd district stretches from the Pacific Coast in the west, through the Columbia River Gorge in the east, and from the town of Bucoda in the north to the Columbia River in the South.  Southwest Washington is home to a wide range of employers that includes a campus for Hewlett-Packard, the headquarters for Nautilus, Insitu, WaferTech, JH Kelly, Cascade Hardwoods, and hundreds of small- and medium-sized businesses.

Southwest Washington is known for its rich resources and natural beauty.  On a clear day, the jagged ridge of Mt. St. Helens can be seen from virtually every corner of the district.  Meriwether Lewis mentioned the region in his journal as “the only desired situation for settlement west of the Rocky Mountains.” From the towering Douglas Firs in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest to the rocky cliffs of Cape Disappointment, the region contains a diverse spectrum of scenery and landscapes.

Southwest Washington’s history can also be seen throughout the district.  The North Head and Cape Disappointment Lighthouses have stood in the southwest corner of the district for over a century.  Officer’s Row in Vancouver was once home to important historical figures like President Ulysses S. Grant, General George C. Marshall, and General O.O. Howard—his house now serving as the location for Jaime’s district office.  The Monticello Hotel has been a staple of downtown Longview since its founding in 1923.

Major annual events held in the 3rd district include the 4th of July Celebration at the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site where attendance can reach up to 60,000.  The Washington State International Kite Festival in Long Beach attracts visitors from around the world when held every August.
