House Judiciary Committee Issues
In January 2013, Bob began his service as the 52nd Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee in the U.S. House of Representatives.
The Judiciary Committee’s jurisdiction is broad and it is one of the most active committees in Congress. This Committee is at the forefront of some of the most significant issues of our day, including protecting constitutional freedoms and civil liberties, immigration reform, oversight of the Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security, legal and regulatory reform, intellectual property protections, competition and antitrust laws, and combating terrorism, drug trafficking, human trafficking, and other crimes. Even measures to rein in spending, like the balanced budget amendment, come before the Judiciary Committee. It is evident that this Committee plays a critical role in advancing pro-growth policies to create jobs and restore economic prosperity for families and businesses in the Sixth District of Virginia and across the nation. By serving as Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, Bob sits in a position of leadership as the strongest voice possible for his constituents on these important issues. Under Bob's leadership, the Judiciary Committee will advance an agenda that is focused on making America stronger and more competitive. 
Bob is the first House Judiciary Committee Chairman from Virginia since 1887 and one of only four Virginians to hold this position since the Committee’s creation in 1813. He continues the Sixth District of Virginia's rich tradition of service on the House Judiciary Committee, including the late Richard Poff, who served on the Committee from 1953-1972 and the late Caldwell Butler, who served on the Committee from 1972-1983.
