Yesterday I voted YES on H.R. 6297, the Iran Sanctions Extension Act, to extend sanctions against Iran over the next decade. Iran – still the world’s largest state sponsor of terrorism - has violated the Obama Administration’s nuclear agreement, and has continued to develop nuclear missiles and support acts of terrorism and terrorist groups. The Iran Sanctions Extension Act would be an important tool to counter Iran’s hostile activity, and to hold them accountable - something the current administration seems unwilling to do.

This piece of legislation passed the House 419-1, with almost unanimous support from across the political spectrum. It now goes to the Senate, and then hopefully to the President.

This announcement that the Huntington VA Medical Center has been selected as a priority site for a new Fisher House construction is great news for our region. The Fisher House Foundation is best known for a network of comfort homes where military and veterans’ families can stay at no cost while a loved one is receiving treatment.

I’ve visited the Huntington VAMC many times, and I know how committed their healthcare professionals and staff are to the mission of caring for our veterans. The addition of a Fisher House on-site will ensure that the families of our nation’s heroes will be able to support their hospitalized loved ones in person, and not have to worry about where they are going to stay or how they are going to pay.

Huntington VA Medical Center

We have great news! The Huntington VAMC has been selected by The Secretary of Veterans Affairs as a priority site for a future Fisher House construction. Fisher... Houses provide a "home away from home" for the family members and caregivers of hospitalized Veterans and Active Duty servicemembers. Fisher Houses provide the opportunity for family members and caregivers to be actively involved in their loved one's treatment plan, supporting positive clinical outcomes and access to medical care.
"This is huge for our medical center and the Veterans and families that we serve," said Brian Nimmo, Huntington VA Medical Center Director. "The Fisher House provides temporary accommodations for families and caregivers which will be especially beneficial for our Veterans with extended inpatient stays. There are no other Fisher Houses in West Virginia, and so we are elated to have been selected as a priority site."
U.S. Congressional representatives have been hugely supportive of a VA Fisher House in Huntington.
"This is truly great news for the Huntington VA Medical Center and for all West Virginia Veterans," Senator Joe Manchin said. "I applaud Brian Nimmo, the Director of the Huntington VA, for having the vision to request the first Fisher House in West Virginia. I was proud to endorse Brian's request and to work with the VA and Fisher House to secure this funding. I thank Veterans Affairs Secretary Bob McDonald for visiting the Huntington VA with me in 2015, and making good on his promise to support West Virginia Veterans. I especially want to thank my good friend, Ken Fisher, for making this investment in West Virginia. I first worked with Ken Fisher during the government shutdown in 2013, when we worked on a solution to ensure that the families of fallen service members would continue to receive benefits even if the government stopped functioning. Ken has been a good friend to West Virginia Veterans, and I thank him for his continued support."
Senator Shelley Moore Capito said it was wonderful news for service members and Veterans who are being treated at the Huntington VA Medical Center and their families and caregivers. "The importance of family members being near their loved ones as they recover cannot be understated, and I'm glad this will soon become a reality for more service members and Veterans in West Virginia," said Senator Capito.
"This announcement is welcome news for Veterans and their families across the tristate area," Congressman Evan Jenkins said. "This Fisher House will ensure our Veterans' families are cared for and supported while their loved ones are receiving much-needed care at the Huntington VA Medical Center. This project has been in the works for years, and I am so pleased that we will be able to bring a Fisher House to Huntington to provide a safe and welcoming place to stay for the families of our heroes."
There are no timelines for the construction, and a specific site has not been determined, although a requirement for VA Fisher Houses is that they be located on the medical center grounds, or within walking distance. Huntington was among 14 sites recommended as new priorities for future Fisher Houses.

Yesterday, I joined volunteers in Scioto County with the American Red Cross for a Veterans Day canned food drive. Local volunteers led the effort, beginning in August, to collect canned foods for local veterans, and yesterday all the items were distributed. They collected over 2,000 items for 100 veterans.

I was assigned one of the routes to deliver needed items to local in-need veterans. I'm certainly glad I had the chance to help out...but, there are others, pictured here, who also deserve thanks. They worked hard well in advance to make sure the day was a success. The veterans of Scioto County are grateful for your efforts...and, so am I.

Veterans Day is a special day. As I have been out and about fulfilling my pledge to volunteer 100 hours to veterans and veteran-related organizations this year, I have met many local heroes walking among us. Most of them would reject the title of “hero,” but they are deserving of the description. The United States of America would not exist as the country it does today if it weren’t for those who have served – and are serving today – to defend our freedom and liberties. I’m ...so honored to have met with so many of you this year.

Making sure these men and women – and all of our veterans – receive the care and benefits they have earned will remain one of my top priorities. They deserve a more efficient Veterans Administration that serves them effectively…not a fundamentally broken system mired in bureaucratic red-tape. Anything less dishonors our veterans. This must be a priority of both the new Administration and Congress.

The ceremonies of Veterans Day are an essential thread in the fabric of the United States – paying tribute to military service. I hope that Ohioans, and all Americans, will take the time to honor the veterans in their lives. It could be your parent, friend, neighbor, or son or daughter. Their sacrifices for America are the reasons we are able to enjoy the many freedoms we do today.

I am truly humbled and honored that you chose me to represent Eastern and Southeastern Ohio in the U.S. House of Representatives. I will continue to work with anyone, of any political persuasion, who is committed to finding solutions to the challenges America faces. I never forget that I am here to serve you - it's not the other way around.

There are vitally important issues that must be addressed. We must seek to reform the Department of Veterans Affairs. Our national debt stands at over $20 trillion - a truly frightening amount. And, we must put a halt to the job-killing regulations and the war on coal that have done so much damage locally. I look forward to getting back to Washington next week to start working on these and many other important causes. The American people had their say, and now it's time to get to work on your behalf.

On this date in 1775, the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution calling for a force consisting of two Battalions of Marines to be raised to serve as landing forces for the recently formed Continental Navy. For the past 241 years, Marines stationed around the world have fought with honor and valor protecting and defending our freedoms. Happy Birthday to the Marine Corps...and Semper Fi.

A milestone was met in Monroe County this afternoon, as the groundbreaking ceremony took place for the new county jail. Sheriff Black and other county and local officials have been working a long time to make this project a reality. The current jail is only a holding facility, meaning that all prisoners are shipped out to neighboring counties. It’s been a major, and expensive, inconvenience for law enforcement and the county courts. Soon, that will no longer be an issue.

I was glad to join around 200 volunteers with the Retired Seniors Volunteer Program (RSVP) in Marietta yesterday afternoon to assemble over 50,000 meals to distribute to 9 different area food pantries. Today's efforts, and those done all year around by those involved with RSVP, make a big difference to the approximately 9,000 needy families in Washington County.

Yesterday afternoon, I toured the New Castle School of Trades East Liverpool Campus. The school plans on opening for students early in 2017. The commitment, investment, and dedication of officials in East Liverpool and Columbiana County has played a vital role in making this nearly $8 million project a reality; they’ve been all in. Mayor Ryan Stovall and school officials took the time to show me all of the exciting things they have planned for early 2017 when students begin ...to arrive. It’s not only going a beautiful facility, but also one that's going to provide great career opportunities in needed fields for hardworking people of Eastern Ohio.

The school is located at the corner of 5th and Washington Streets where two rustic, historical buildings have been renovated to house the school. I look forward to going back when the school opens, and talking to some of the students there about the exciting opportunities heading their way.

This weekend marks the start of the Ohio high school football playoffs…I was glad to make it out to a couple games around the area this season. Best of luck to the following schools from Eastern and Southeastern Ohio who qualified for the postseason, or have students from our district competing for them on the field: Barnesville, Bellaire, Bishop Rosecrans, Cambridge, Chesapeake High School, Fort Frye Football, Indian Creek Local School District, Ironton, Lisbon, Mooney, River, Shadyside Tigers Football, South Range, Southern, Springfield Local High School, Steubenville, Toronto, Waterford, and Wheelersburg Football.

I’m looking forward to seeing some deep playoff runs!

Great news this afternoon: AT&T and the Zanesville-Muskingum Port Authority announced the Airport Industrial Park in Zanesville is now “fiber-ready.”

For far too long, we here in Eastern and Southeastern Ohio have been at the back of the line when it comes to new technologies. I’m working hard to change that. Regardless of where I go or to whom I talk with, I always let people know about the opportunities waiting to be discovered in places in Muskingum County and the energy-...resource rich region of Eastern and Southeastern Ohio. We have huge potential in tele-health, technology innovation, and continued energy development. The opportunities are right in front of us. But, to capitalize on those opportunities, we must first get the infrastructure in place - roads, bridges, sewer systems, AND broadband internet access.

I was glad to join representatives from AT&T, the port authority, and other county officials…the Airport Business park is open for business and new opportunities!

The 2017 Open Enrollment period for Obamacare begins today. For many, it won’t be a pleasant experience sorting through options (maybe more than one option if you are lucky) for the upcoming year. The average cost of a benchmark plan will increase by an average of 22% nationwide.

I’d like to hear about some of what you are learning about your plan and/or premium - bad news, price increases, size of your network, number of options, or even good news if you stumble on some. Though, the best news of all would be the repeal and replacement of this disastrous law, which I will continue to work toward.

Happy Halloween, everyone! I hope everyone has a great time going Trick-or-Treat tonight. Please enjoy yourselves...and, be safe. Our hometown of Marietta celebrated Trick-or-Treat last Saturday evening...some reports say over 700 children participated. I'm honored to live in a small town community that puts so much emphasis on safely observing Halloween.

Thursday evening was the 79th annual Belpre Area Chamber of Commerce (BACC) Dinner. The BACC brings together over 150 businesses, residents, and community leaders committed to creating a vibrant business community.

The keynote address was given by Lynne Fruth, the president of Fruth Pharmacy. She spoke about some of the many challenges her company faced – including a major fire in 1996 - and how they overcame them. The company was established in 1952, and there are now 29 Fruth Pharmacies, including one in Belpre. I’ve toured some of her pharmacies, so it was very interesting to hear from her. She was a great speaker.

Congratulations to all of the BACC award winners!

This is big news, and a preview of what a possible Hillary Clinton presidency would look like: ongoing impropriety, arrogance, and cover up. Hillary Clinton has no one to blame but herself. She was the one who recklessly decided to do an end run around State Department protocol by setting up a homebrew server that put her political privacy above our national security through which she sent and received classified e-mails.

A potential Commander-in-Chief must have many traits, one of the most important of which is being able to handle America’s secrets with the care and respect we expect - and in the way that our laws demand. It is my belief – and has been all along – that Hillary Clinton’s actions have disqualified her from being President of the United States.

Earlier this morning, I joined Fox Business to discuss the impacts of the upcoming election on the coal industry and the rising cost of healthcare premiums under Obamacare.

Hillary Clinton famously said “we’re going to put a lot of coal miners and coal companies out of business.” Thousands of hardworking people in Eastern and Southeastern Ohio depend on the coal industry for their livelihoods, and most still rely on the electricity from coal-fired power plants. Without coal,... utility bills will go up and we’ll lose jobs. We must end the burdensome Washington regulations that are strangling businesses and costing us jobs.

And, we just found out this week, at least officially, that more large increases for Obamacare premiums are coming down the pike, and that many consumers will have fewer choices. This law is not working - Period! It is past time to repeal Obamacare once and for all. House Republicans have outlined a new health care reform initiative that would put healthcare decisions back in the hands of patients and their doctors, improve quality, and deliver the affordable health care choices you were promised.

I am sure this is not “breaking” news to many of you.

Before taxpayer-provided subsidies, premiums for a midlevel "ObamaCare" plan will increase an average of 25 percent across the 39 states served by the federally run market.

1 in 5 consumers will only have plans from a single insurer to pick from, after many carriers bailed out of the exchanges because they were taking on such heavy, unsustainable losses.

...

We are a far cry from "if you like you doctor, you can keep you doctor," and "bending the cost curve downward." This proves that Obamacare is the disaster we predicted it would be...and, it's exactly why we must repeal and replace it.

Congratulations to Harold Montgomery, who just celebrated 50 years in business on the 200 block of Second Avenue in Gallipolis. I stopped by his barber shop this morning to present him with an American flag, which I had flown over the U.S. Capitol specifically in his honor. The Montgomery Barber Shop had customers waiting for haircuts when I dropped by, which was no surprise. Congrats, Harold!

For many in Eastern and Southeastern Ohio, Friday night means high school football. Tonight is Senior Night at Meigs High School, as the Marauders and the Wellston Rockets meet up for a Tri-Valley Conference game. Meigs Head Coach Mike Bartrum (currently a Meigs County commissioner and former NFL player) invited me to toss the coin before kickoff. The weather isn't ideal, but it isn't keeping the fans away. Nice to meet so many of you before the game this evening.
