Pompeo: Unacceptable No One Yet Held Responsible for Intelligence Manipulation at CENTCOM

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Mike Pompeo (R-KS), commented on this morning’s House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence Hearing where Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, Deputy Secretary of Defense Robert Work, and Under Secretary of Defense Marcel Lettre testified.  Congressman Pompeo serves on the congressional joint task force, which found that U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) leaders manipulated intelligence products to downplay the threat from ISIS in Iraq.

Pompeo said, “Today, I questioned Director Clapper and Deputy Secretary Work about their roles in rectifying the manipulation of intelligence at CENTCOM.  With our men and women in uniform out in the field, the administration cannot just hide behind its forthcoming Inspector General report.  It is unacceptable that those responsible for downplaying the threat from ISIS will not be held accountable until a drawn-out review is completed.  Our senior leadership must be well informed, the American people cannot be misled, and our troops deserve the best decisions that will keep them safe.”

Pompeo serves on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.  He is a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, an Army veteran, and ran two small businesses before joining Congress in 2011.
