CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. - Residents in Riverdale will soon notice a change at the Church Street Station post office.

It will be dedicated in honor of the city's first officer killed in the line of duty.

Maj. Gregory Barney was killed in the line of duty on Feb. 11 as he was giving chase during a drug raid.

The honor was fast-tracked through the House and Senate and sent to the White House.

It was championed by U.S. Rep. David Scott, who told Channel 2’s Wendy Corona that now is when law enforcement needs to feel the love.

“They move fast, they move quickly to protect us. Let us move quickly to show our appreciation and love for our law enforcement officials,” Scott said.

“He spent 26 years in the city of Riverdale just serving and protecting that community and it's great to know that they love him this much and have him honored in this way,” widow Lisa Barney said.

Barney says she and her twin 16-year-old sons have felt the love since his passing and this latest honor is another example.

“Seems like we've been celebrating his life for the past eight months,” Barney said.

On Saturday, the post office on Church Street will bear his name.

A process which typically takes numerous years fast-tracked by bipartisan efforts to honor a man who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

“He loved that community and they loved him right back,” Barney said.

The couple would have celebrated 18 years of marriage just last week.

The family is preparing to honor the man they still desperately miss, but are so very proud of.
