Millions of Americans...

suffer the effects of natural and man-made disasters each year. In an effort to strengthen the federal government’s disaster preparedness and response, AmeriCorps NCCC and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) partnered to create FEMA Corps. This unique program unites individuals who share a passion for service and provides the ultimate professional development experience.

Serve. Prepare. Respond.

As a FEMA Corps Member, you are assigned to a regional campus where you complete initial training. You are placed on a diverse team of 18-24 year-olds and work under the direction of one Team Leader. Throughout your 10-month term of service, you and your team deploy to different project sites and serve to support FEMA in various capacities. You live, work and travel as a team for the duration of your service.

A day in our world.

Disaster project areas include: preparedness, mitigation, response and recovery. Each service experience is different and you and your team may complete projects in one or all of these disaster areas. Project settings also vary and can include active disaster areas, recovery sites and FEMA regional offices.

It can seem like a small thing, but helping those affected by disaster complete paperwork brings them one step closer to returning home. Keeping this perspective helped me and my team persevere even when the times got tough.

I got to meet new people in places I’d never even heard of! By working on a team and traveling throughout the U.S., I walked away with a deeper appreciation for new cultures, and memories I will cherish forever.

Our team has made a great impact on the logistics side of FEMA. We have doubled the manpower at two distribution centers and helped send and receive over one million pounds of commodities to disaster survivors and first responders.”

- Dani (Lake Mills, WI)

FEMA Corps member unloading cargo from Red Cross truck.

We organized and loaded 10,000 lbs. of water and other relief supplies. I could definitely feel our impact when we sent out these trailers of supplies to be received at the site of an active disaster.”
