This week, I joined other Republicans on the Ways & Means Committee in a letter written to Treasury Secretary Jack Lew urging the Treasury Department to withdraw the regulations it recently proposed which would increase the estate tax on family-owned businesses and farmers. This regulation would put an even greater tax burden on folks in Kansas when they try to pass their family businesses down to the next generation. Death should not be a taxable event, and we need to make sure families don’t face an impossible burden in their time of grief.

Congratulations to President-elect Donald Trump! I look forward to working together to put forward a conservative, common-sense agenda that will help and empower Kansans and Americans everywhere.
My thoughts are with the family of Staff Sergeant Matthew Lewellen, a Lawrence native, who was killed while serving in Jafr, Jordan. We will always honor Matthew’s dedication, devotion and sacrifice for this nation as he served his country. Please join me at this tragic time in praying for Matthew and his family.
Enjoyed meeting with some old friends and some new ones at The Shelter in Lawrence and learning more about what they do. They serve as an essential resource within Lawrence and Douglas County. So pleased to see they are so well supported by the community!
I had a great time attending the Special Troops Battalion Change of Command ceremony at Fort Leavenworth!
The FBI’s decision to reopen their investigation into Hillary Clinton’s email practices is the correct decision. Secretary Clinton willfully endangered American national security through her careless mishandling of important State Department information, and then deleted her emails rather than disclose them. Now that yet more emails have been discovered, it is my hope that the FBI will swiftly conduct their investigation to discover the truth the American people deserve to hear.
Happy #NavyDay16! Thank you to all the courageous U.S. Navy sailors who serve and have served

I had a great time speaking to the government class at Benedictine College this morning - thanks for all the interesting questions!
Great news! Yesterday, the International Association of Chiefs of Police endorsed the idea of having every police officer in the US receive Mental Health First Aid training. My legislation, H.R 1877, to fund this training unanimously passed the House in September and the training could help law enforcement officers and many others better spot and aid folks living with mental illness.
Lynn Jenkins shared U.S. Navy's video.
Happy 241st birthday to the U.S. Navy! Thank you to all the courageous men and women who fight to keep us safe
Today is World Mental Health Day. Every year, one in 40 Americans will experience a mental illness. We must make sure we are ready to stand by their side in their time of need. In September, the House passed my bill, the Mental Health First Aid Act which would provide vital training so that community leaders such as teachers, veterans' advocates and law enforcement agents have the knowledge to identify and provide help to folks who need it.
Be sure to check out this great piece from Leavenworth County Attorney Todd Thompson about the dangers and costs that bringing Guantanamo Bay detainees to Fort Leavenworth would mean.
