Some 500 Sequoia High School students are packing the theater to share part of their morning with me. It's such an honor and inspiration to spend time with my young constituents who will be our future leaders.

My deepest sympathies go out to the family and friends of Janet Reno, a formidable force for justice who – despite the many political pressures in Washington – made it clear throughout her career that she was guided by facts and the law. As the first woman to serve as U.S. Attorney General she withstood an onslaught of constant criticism ranging from professional critiques to mean-spirited jabs about her appearance while facing some of our nation’s toughest legal challenges. But she never bowed to that pressure or let personal issues get in the way of doing her job. I hope that her enduring legacy – one of tireless service and duty to our country – may provide some comfort to her loved ones during this difficult time.http://www.nytimes.com/2016/11/08/us/janet-reno-dead.html

Ms. Reno’s eight years in the office placed her in the middle of some of the most divisive episodes of the Clinton presidency.

I stand proudly with the Standing Rock Sioux and all who have stood up to oil interests driving the Dakota Access Pipeline construction. It’s heartening to see so many people gathered in defense of both Native American rights and our environment. Placing sacred grounds and precious water sources in harm’s way for a few more dollars in oil profits is appalling. I commend President Obama for taking action to temporarily suspend expansion of DAPL as the Army Corps of Engineers considers alternative routes. Now, Congress must do what it can to work with the Army Corps of Engineers and Native American nations to develop a solution that is environmentally and legally sound, and respects indigenous lands.

"There's an obligation for authorities to show restraint" in their handling of people protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline, President Obama said in an interview with the news organization Now This.

Another day, another LCS problem. When will Congress stop wasting billions of taxpayers' dollars and sink this pork ship?

Washington, DC -- Congresswoman Jackie Speier (CA-14) on Tuesday issued the following statement in light of recent reports of the latest breakdown of the Littoral Combat Ship USS Montgomery (LCS-8). Listen up, Californians! Open Enrollment to apply for health insurance through Covered California begins today and runs through January, 31, 2017. If you like your current plan and your personal information has not changed (i.e. income stayed constant, no marriages, no childbirths, etc.), and if you allowed Covered CA to automatically check your income during last year’s enrollment, you will most likely be automatically enrolled in your current plan. However, It’s still a goo...d idea to check out Covered California’s website and shop around for a better deal! Nearly 80% of customers who shop around either to pay less, or see their rates increase by no more than 5%.
Use Covered California’s online “Shop and Compare” tool for a side-by-side comparison of your current plan’s rates and the rates of other plans for 2017. Remember, if you want your coverage to start on January 1, 2017 you must sign up by December 15, 2016.
Don’t wait until the last minute to #GetCovered!
For more information, go to www.coveredca.com or call (800) 300-1506 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.

When you welcome trick-or treaters to your home tonight, consider including non-food treats, such as glow sticks or toys. The Teal Pumpkin Project makes our Halloween tradition inclusive for kids with peanut and tree nut allergies. Last week I held a press conference about food allergies where we heard from three children who are or were allergic to nuts.

The Smithsonian Institute's gross mishandling of a confirmed sexual assault demands immediate corrective action. The behavior of Smithsonian officials in this incident has ranged from incompetent to actively complicit, and smacks of a cover-up. The Smithsonian must take meaningful steps to address the numerous failures of their sexual misconduct policies and procedures.

It is astounding and shameful that the Department of Defense still fails to track incidents of military hazing, despite the numerous lives devastated by this issue. Those of us in the House Armed Services Committee must get to the bottom of this!

Thank you Brigham Young University for working to protect students who report sexual assault from the needless and senseless trauma of code of conduct sanctions. While BYU has taken this important first step, many colleges and universities still threaten survivors and witnesses with the possibility of code of conduct violations, which has had a chilling effect on students coming forward following an attack. That is why I have introduced the Campus Sexual Assault Whistleblower Protection Act, a bipartisan bill to stop our schools from punishing survivors and witnesses and failing to report and properly investigate these violent crimes.

Once again, House Republicans are risking national security to insist on a discriminatory provision that has nothing to do with the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) and has no business in a Democracy. Republicans are using a critical defense bill as a tool to advance an extreme and intolerant agenda that places the security and safety of all Americans at risk. I strongly opposed the provision and voted against it in the House, and I applaud my colleagues in the Senate and the President for taking a stand now to block this hateful provision. I encourage Congressional Republicans to stop these reckless partisan games with our nation’s defense funding.
