CSU Channel Islands has been recognized for service in the community, receiving a presidential award.

The Camarillo university was named to the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for the sixth year in a row. And for the first time, CI was recognized "with distinction."

CSUCI was one of 14 California State University campuses to receive the recognition. Three other CSU campuses received the "with distinction" designation — Dominguez Hills, Fresno and San Francisco.

CSUCI was recognized for service involving the homeless, the environment and health. Students also were recognized for mentoring area high schoolers and encouraging them to go to college.

Nursing and communication students set up a pop-up "store," where low-income families could choose donated clothing. Other students helped document and interpret the impact of the oil spill at Refugio State Beach last year.

CSUCI students contributed 218,852 hours of service in 2014-15, including internships, student teaching, nursing and volunteering, according to a news release.
