Protecting Social Security

Dear Friend,

Recently, I had the opportunity to sit down with a group of seniors from around the First Congressional District – Doris, Lance and Grace. As we sat in Doris’ apartment in Kirkland, we talked about the vital role Social Security plays in their lives, as well as the importance of protecting the program for current retirees and future generations.

Social Security has long been a lifeline for our middle class, and today it supports more than 100,000 beneficiaries in our district. Unfortunately, Social Security is facing dangerous attacks in Congress. With some House leaders pushing to raise the retirement age and reduce cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs) for retirees, our conversation highlighted what’s at stake if Social Security is weakened — or privatized.

That’s why I’m working to ensure the long-term stability of Social Security. I helped introduce the FAIR Social Security (H.R. 1984), which would keep the program solvent for more than 40 years by scrapping the income contribution cap and making sure all Americans pay their fair share. It also increases COLAs by using a formula that better reflects seniors’ actual buying habits, ensuring they don’t lose purchasing power over time. Additionally, I am a cosponsor of the SAVE Benefits Act (H.R. 4144) to give seniors an emergency benefit of around $580 to make up for the lack of a COLA this year.

We can’t break our promise to our seniors who have paid for and earned their benefits. I remain committed to taking steps to strengthen and protect Social Security for this generation and those to come.
