EXPANDED AREA:
The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services have expanded the area in which properties with groundwater wells affected by the PFC’s from the former Wurtsmith Air Force Base are eligible to receive an alternate water supply. (either a reverse osmosis filtration system or an in-home water cooler). The expanded area includes properties between Van Ettan Lake and Lake Huron, from the F-41/US-23 split, north to Chippewa Road. If you are a property owner in this area with a well, please call DHD2 at 989-343-1852 to begin the process of obtaining an alternate water source.
Oscoda Township PFCs Contamination in Specifically Tested Groundwater Wells
- Oscoda Township Municipal water is safe to drink and cook with according to The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ).
- The advisory to seek an alternate water supply applies to homes and businesses surrounding the former Air Base whose drinking water wells have tested positive for PFC contamination.
- Residents affected by the Health Advisory (Specifically those who had well water testing and laboratory results from MDEQ) may contact the Iosco Branch of District Health Department No. 2 for information on available resources to access municipal drinking water. SAVE THE DATE - Denise Bryan, Health Officer with District Health Department No. 2, invites residents and interested persons to attend the next town hall meeting in Oscoda on Tuesday, October 25, 2016. The meeting will be held at the Oscoda Methodist Church, located at 120 West Dwight Avenue in Oscoda. There will be an open house from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. with the community meeting beginning at 6:00 p.m.

FILTER REPLACEMENT – District Health Department No. 2 is inquiring with the State as to whether funds will be made available for the purchase of replacement filters for the reverse osmosis systems provided by the State. An answer on this will be forthcoming.

United States Representative Dan Kildee was in town for an update regarding the situation concerning PFC's in certain groundwater drinking wells surrounding the former Wurtsmith Air Force Base. Emphasis for action at the federal level to remediate the situation was discussed at length during the meeting.

On Wednesday, April 6, 2016, District Health Department No. 2 learned the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) will conduct further testing for PFC's in well groundwater around Van Ettan Lake. The MDEQ will also collect samples on the Former Wurtsmith Air Force Base and results will be available in two (2) weeks.

District Health Department No. 2 has made several efforts to notify all homes affected by the Health Advisory related to PFC’s in well groundwater regarding the Water Access Voucher System. If you have had your well water tested by MDEQ and are one of the homes affected by the advisory and need information on the Vouchers, where to obtain water, and a free water jug, please call DHD2 at 1-989-362-6183 for more information.

District Health Department No. 2 in coordination with Oscoda Township has developed a Water Access Voucher System for homes affected by the Health Advisory related to PFC’s in well groundwater. The system allows affected homes to obtain a voucher which provides access to a water filling location and one 5-gallon water jug. For more information regarding the vouchers, please call 1-989-362-6183.

Donations of bottled water have been received in the Tawas Office of District Health Department No. 2 and is available for homes who have been affected by the Health Advisory related to PFC’s in well groundwater. Bottled water can be picked up at the Tawas Office of DHD2 located at 420 W. Lake Street, Tawas City. Residents will need to have their water access voucher to receive the water and at this time, it is limited to one (1) case per address. A sincere Thank You to the citizens as well as the Oscoda Rotary for their generous donations.

The Advisory below was provided to specific residents whose well water results detected PFC contamination. The testing was conducted by the Department of Defense and Michigan Department of Environmental Quality.

RE: PFC’s Detected in Ground Water
Dear Homeowner,
As a precautionary measure, District Health Department No. 2 is issuing a Health Advisory to specific residents who received recent water test results from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ). Based on the results detecting PFC’s in your well groundwater, and the limited scientific data available on PFC’s, District Health Department No. 2 is advising you to seek an alternate water supply for drinking and the preparation of food.
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) and District Health Department No. 2 advise as a precautionary measure that residents do not consume the water in any way.
