CONGRESSMAN BECERRA: GOVERNOR BROWN TACKLES LEAD CONTAMINATION IN EASTSIDE CAUSED BY SHUTTERED EXIDE BATTERY PLANT

LOS ANGELES - Congressman Xavier Becerra (CA-34), Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus and representative for Boyle Heights, issued the following statement on Governor Brown’s proposed $176 million Exide Cleanup Plan:

“Governor Brown deserves real credit for stepping up to the plate to fast-track the cleanup of Exide’s reckless lead contamination of surrounding homes and neighborhoods in eastern Los Angeles. Exide has been a bad actor throughout this ordeal callously disregarding the thousands of families who must live, work and play in the vicinity of the now-closed battery plant. Residents were getting desperate as they watched the trauma of families in Flint, Michigan dealing with the man-made disaster of lead-poisoning of their drinking water. 

"While this is a great step forward, it’s still the beginning. We must ensure that the testing and cleanup of all homes surrounding Exide moves forward without delay. And we must continue to hold the owners of Exide responsible for the cost of this disaster. 

"Whether it’s Flint, Michigan, Porter Ranch or Boyle Heights, the health and safety of our families should not have to wait. I will continue to press the authorities and Exide to get this done.”
