Nature notes
There is one bird mystery being discussed at present. Enormous flocks of woodpigeons, flying mainly in a southerly direction, have been seen in early morning in many places in Britain. On Wednesday, at Painswick Beacon in Gloucestershire, an amazing total of 90,750 woodpigeons were counted passing overhead, and at Peterstone Gout near Cardiff, 73,439 were seen, many following the coast of the Bristol Channel. There were other great flypasts reported at Black Bank, Staffordshire, and at Caldene Fields, near Bradford, with a “mad rush” at dawn at Braes of Doune, near Stirling. This phenomenon has been known in autumn for many years, and the birds were thought to be migrants arriving or passing through. There is little evidence for that. Now they are thought to be birds that roosted together at night, and are dispersing again across the land. Again, there is no clear evidence. So what are the woodpigeons doing? Research is needed. Migration reports are on trektellen.org
