Boustany Urges Congress and the Administration to Help Businesses Hire Workers Again

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Representative Charles W. Boustany, Jr., (R-Southwest Louisiana), today called for keeping taxes competitive to encourage businesses to hire workers and get America’s economy going again during a Ways and Means Income Security and Family Support Subcommittee hearing on unemployment benefits and economic recovery.

It’s no secret that the best way to get Americans back to work is through job creation,” Boustany said.  “Maintaining a low and competitive tax rate will allow businesses to compete, expand and hire new workers.  We can save and create jobs in lots of different ways, but this is one of the fastest and most effective.  Unemployment benefits are a critical safety net.  However, the unemployment benefit program must not be used to stifle job creation.

Today’s hearing stemmed from the Economic Recovery Act passed by Congress earlier in the year.  Several problems have resulted from the hastily passed bill, including a lack of oversight, slow delivery of funds and new tax burdens on businesses which should be creating jobs.  Boustany opposed the act, instead pushing for a combination of targeted federal spending, lower taxes to spur employment and greater transparency.

The hearing included Michael Mitternight, President and Owner of Factory Service Agency, Inc. based in Metairie, Louisiana.  The company employs 13 people and specializes in commercial air conditioning construction and servicing.  Mitternight testified to the difficulties his business faces due to possible increased business taxes resulting from additional unemployment insurance.
