Boustany Announces $10.6 Million Grant for Grand Lake Shoreline Protection

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Representative Charles W. Boustany, Jr., (R-Southwest Louisiana), today announced a $10.6 million grant for the Grand Lake Shoreline Protection project.

“This grant allows the Corps to rebuild a significant piece of coastline at Grand Lake, which will help stop the erosion plaguing Cameron Parish,” Boustany said.  “This is an exciting grant, and it demonstrates the importance of royalties from offshore oil and gas production.”

Boustany announced the grant from the Minerals Management Service (MMS) through the Coastal Impact Assistance Program.  According to MMS, “The grant will be used to construct approximately 37,800 linear feet of rock breakwater to halt erosion on the south shore of Grand Lake, located in the Mermentau Basin in Cameron Parish, Louisiana. The breakwater will be between the mouth of Superior Canal on the east and Tebo Point.”

Cameron Parish Administrator Tina Horn said, “The area around Grand Lake has been eroding year after year.  This grant will help restore the coastline and benefit wildlife and fisheries because the land serves as a nursing ground.”
