Today Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen was joined by Senators Ben Cardin (D-MD), Bob Casey (D-PA), and Congressman Bobby Scott (D-VA) in urging the Obama Administration to strongly support agricultural conservation programs to ensure a clean Chesapeake Bay in its FY 2017 budget. To increase the economic benefits from the lands and waters throughout the Bay’s watershed, states are working to achieve the Chesapeake Bay Clean Water Blueprint, but progress is in jeopardy if programs are not sufficiently funded.

Today Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen urged the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to take measures to protect Americans from the outbreak of Zika virus. In a letter to NIH and CDC leaders, he called for continued research to halt the spread of the disease.

Today Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen joined Senators Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy (both D-CT) and Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) to introduce the Equal Access to Justice for Victims of Gun Violence Act. The bill will ensure that victims of gun violence are allowed to have their day in court, and that the gun industry – manufacturers, sellers and interest groups – is not shielded from liability when it acts with negligence and disregard for public safety. The bill would repeal the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA).

Mikulski and Ben Cardin (all D-Md.) today announced that Carroll County, Md. is one of the 14 additional counties in 10 states designated as High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas (HIDTAs). The designations will enable Carroll County to receive federal resources to further the coordination and development of drug control efforts among federal, state, and local health and law enforcement officials.
