I-4 Widening

The largest transportation expansion project in Central Florida’s history is the 21-mile Ultimate I-4 Project.  I-4 will be expanded by four lanes. The new lanes will initially run from Kirkman Road to East of SR 434, and Rep. Mica is working to move forward additional extensions from Kirkman Road to US Route 192 in the south and to Volusia County in the north. Construction will begin this year and this project will employ thousands of workers over the next seven years.

This $2.1 billion project is moving forward as a public-private partnership (P3). This was made possible as a result of transportation legislation that Rep. Mica authored and that was enacted by Congress in 2012. As a P3, half of the project cost will be funded from private capital. The project will expand capacity on I-4.  Toll revenues from these new lanes will finance the additional capacity and eventually pay down the bonds on the new lanes. Under Mica’s bill, all interstate highway lanes that are free will remain free and cannot be tolled in Central Florida or on any federal highway.
