Mica To Host 2006 High School Art Contests In Deland And Ponte Verda Beach

WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. Rep. John L. Mica (R-7th District) will hold his Annual “Artistic Discovery” 7th Congressional District Art Competition Reception for high school students from 1:00 - 2:30 pm on April 30th at the DeLand Museum of Arts.
“High School students from Volusia, Seminole and Orange Counties have been invited to submit their works of art for this year’s competition,” Congressman Mica stated. “The public is invited to attend this event, which will be an opportunity to recognize artistic talent from our region.”
From 1:00 to 2:30 pm on Sunday, April 30th, the Congressman will host a reception in honor of student participants, their parents and teachers at the DeLand Museum of Arts, located at 600 North Woodland Boulevard in DeLand. All submitted works of art will be displayed and a winning selection will be announced that evening. Participating students, their parents, sponsoring art teachers and the public are invited to attend the reception and view the arts.
A similar event is being held from 4:30 - 6:00 pm at the Ponte Vedra Cultural Center to choose the most outstanding artist from Flagler, Putnam and St. Johns Counties. The two selected artworks will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol Complex for one year, and the winning artists will be invited to Washington, D.C. in June for a ceremony in their honor to open the 2006 Congressional Art Exhibition.
“It is my hope that the Art Competition will provide our students a unique opportunity to demonstrate their creative talents,” Mica said.
Last year’s winners were Matt Garris of St. Augustine and Tiffany Urquhart of Winter Park.
