At a Research and Technology Subcommittee hearing titled, “Can the IRS Protect Taxpayers’ Personal Information?,” U.S. Representative Randy Hultgren (IL-14) questioned IRS Commissioner John Koskinen about the effectiveness of the agency’s ability to protect the personal information of taxpayers given its “abysmal” record of accountability and transparency. A recent Government Accountability Office (GAO) report highlights severe cybersecurity vulnerabilities at the agency which could expose taxpayers’ most sensitive data to hackers and cyber criminals. The IRS has failed to fully implement 94 outstanding GAO cybersecurity recommendations.
