Press Release

Congressman Tim Huelskamp (KS-01) today supported the Department of Defense (DOD) Appropriations Act of 2017, which passed the House 282-138. The legislation funds critical national security needs, military operations at Fort Riley and across the world, and provides for the care of the men and women of the Armed Forces and their families.

Huelskamp said, “I’ve always been a strong supporter of ensuring our men and women in uniform, especially those at Fort Riley, have the tools and resources they need to continue serving and defending our nation.”

Besides the provisions in the bill to support military spending and a pay raise for our soldiers, Congressman Huelskamp also voted on several key amendments:

  • Rejected efforts to cut funding for the KC-46 tanker program, which would affect the 190th Air Refueling Wing based in Wichita, Kansas,
  • Opposed a new Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) to close DOD military bases,
  • Voted to prohibit Obama from relocating any Gitmo terrorists to Kansas or anywhere in the United States, and
  • Supported an amendment to prohibit the Obama Administration from building new housing for unaccompanied illegal immigrant children on military bases.

In addition, Congressman Huelskamp supported an amendment not just important to our soldiers, but to Kansas’ farmers and ranchers. This amendment by Adrian Smith of Nebraska added language to the bill to prevent the Department of Defense from implementing Meatless Monday.

“Soldiers don’t need Washington bureaucrats dictating their menu choices. These individuals signed up to serve and defend our country, and using them to attack animal agriculture is outrageous.”
