The great recession left millions of Americans unemployed and millions more struggling to support their families. Although we’ve made progress, it is clear that we still have work to do. Moreover longer-term changes, brought by globalization and technology, have drastically changed our economy in the last three decades. With that in mind, competitiveness – how we can position our businesses and workers to compete on a global market – is the lens through which I analyze economic policy.
As the only former CEO of a publicly traded company currently serving in Congress, I understand that we need a vibrant private sector to create long-term job growth and a strong middle class. I support policies that encourage entrepreneurship, innovation, and a better climate for business.
There is also a role for government in making our country more competitive. Around the globe the healthiest economies are those where the public and private sector work together. My competitiveness agenda has five key components: 1) investing in a world-class education and research system for our workers, 2) developing a national energy policy that encourages domestic energy production with a goal towards becoming an alternative energy leader, 3) immigration reform so that the best and brightest can work for our companies, 4) infrastructure investment to rebuild our roads and bridges, and 5) a grand bargain budget deal to get our fiscal house in order.
In May I introduced the first major component of my competitiveness agenda, the Partnership to Build America Act (H.R. 2084). My legislation would finance up to $750 billion in infrastructure investment at no cost to the taxpayer, instead bonds would be sold to the private sector. With strong support from Republicans and Democrats, it represents the bipartisan approach to job creation that I believe is essential. WASHINGTON – Congressman John K. Delaney (MD-6) has filed legislation to expand protections for rent-to-own customers. Often targeted towards low-income and military populations, rent-to-own contracts can feature excessively high fees, predatory interest rates and aggressive collection practices, with customers paying two to three times more, often even as much as five times more, for the same products than if they purchased them from a traditional retailer.
WASHINGTON, DC — The full House of Representatives unanimously approved bipartisan legislation led by Congressmen Todd Young (R-IN) and John Delaney (D-MD) that expands the use of evidenced-based interventions within the federal government, while driving taxpayer savings. It is the first reform bill of its kind that brings the pay-for-performance model into social and public health sphere. Senators Orrin Hatch (R-UT) and Michael Bennet (D-CO) are the lead sponsors of similar companion legislation in Senate.
HAGERSTOWN – Congressman John K. Delaney (MD-6) held an Entrepreneurship Workshop Monday in Hagerstown. The event at the Washington County Free Library was attended by over 130 people and offered Marylanders interested in starting their own business or growing their business to the next level. It provided a chance for local entrepreneurs to learn more about the resources available to them and hear from fellow entrepreneurs and experts.
ROCKVILLE – Congressman John K. Delaney (MD-6) hosted a Sixth District Job Fair today in Rockville at the Bauer Drive Community Recreation Center. The job fair was attended by over 400 people and featured over 50 local businesses and agencies, including many of Maryland’s largest employers.
WASHINGTON – Congressman John K. Delaney (MD-6) has filed legislation to give more Americans access to the basic financial services they need to save and spend their earnings and start a new business. The Equal Access to Banking Act is designed to help the over 68 million Americans who are unbanked or underbanked, a low-income population that must rely on higher-cost alternatives, costing them thousands of dollars a year just to spend the money they’ve earned.

Congressman John K. Delaney (MD-6) will host a College Financial Aid Workshop June 11 in Frederick. The event will take place at Tuscarora High School and will feature representatives from federal, state and local institutions and agencies who will be on hand to answer questions about financial aid options and how to finance college and career goals. The event is free to attend and open to the public.
WASHINGTON – Congressman Delaney filed legislation today to extend federal HUBZone eligibility for Garrett County businesses through 2022. The GARRETT HubZone Redesignation Act would reform the Small Business Administration’s (SBA) management of the HUBZone program, giving Garrett County and similar communities nationwide significantly more time to benefit from the program and adjust to potential changes. Absent congressional action, Garrett County will lose HUBZone status in 2018.
