About Monroe County

Congresswoman Slaughter is proud to represent New York’s 25th Congressional District, which is located exclusively in Monroe County and is centered around Rochester. She has deep roots in Monroe County as she began her public service career in the Monroe County Legislature and has represented a portion of Monroe County since entering Congress.   

Since its founding in 1821, Monroe County has played a key role in the economic and cultural development of Western New York and the entire United States. Numerous trailblazing leaders have called Monroe County home, including Frederick Douglass, Susan B. Anthony, and George Eastman. Monroe County also gave birth to world-renowned Eastman Kodak, Bausch & Lomb, and Xerox.

Today, the 25th District is home to many innovative companies, which support many high-paying jobs in the region. These firms are developing new technologies and manufacturing practices so Monroe County remains a business leader in the twenty-first century. Many of these growing ventures are taking advantage of the fact that Rochester is the world capital of imaging and are making major advances in fields like biotechnology, nanotechnology, photonics and optics.

Congresswoman Slaughter’s district is also home to nine colleges and universities making Monroe County a national hub of leading scholarship and research. In particular, the University of Rochester, the Rochester Institute of Technology, and the National Technical Institute for the Deaf are some of the premiere schools located in the Rochester area. In addition to boasting top colleges and universities, Monroe County is also home to some of the best public high schools in the country.
