House Pro-Choice Caucus Speaks out Against Latest Attack on Women’s Reproductive Rights

July 13, 2016
Press Release

Washington, DC – Representatives Diana DeGette (D-CO) and Louise Slaughter (D-NY), co-chairs of the House Pro-Choice Caucus, today spoke out against the Conscience Protection Act being considered on the House floor this afternoon. This bill would strip away patient protections and give employers and companies the right to override a woman’s personal reproductive health decisions. It’s the latest in a long line of extreme proposals attacking women’s health.

“This legislation is a shameful attempt to give employers and other companies the ability to override a woman’s personal health care decisions. This is part of Republicans’ nationwide trend of legislating their personal beliefs into the lives and decisions of millions of Americans, including women and the LGBT community. This bill is just the latest attempt to try to put up roadblocks that prevent access to women’s constitutionally-protected medical services. Republicans should stop wasting time and taxpayers’ money with partisan attacks on women’s health that have no chance of becoming law,” said Representatives DeGette and Slaughter.

Current law allows health care professionals to object to providing abortion services based on religious or moral reasons. This bill would radically expand this concept to employers and insurance companies, while also making it harder for women to get the important information they need, including medical guidelines and treatment options.
