Washington, D.C. – House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) issued the following statement on the death of Russian dissident Boris Nemtsov:
“I am shocked and saddened by the vicious murder of Russian opposition leader Boris Nemtsov. He was a courageous advocate for democracy and justice in his country and bravely spoke out against the rise of authoritarianism and kleptocracy in Vladimir Putin’s Russia. I will miss my conversations with Mr. Nemtsov, who was hopeful of what Russia could become if only it were unshackled from the binds of corruption and state control.
“Whoever is responsible for Boris Nemtsov’s death, his life will forever stand as a reminder of the damage Putin and his cronies have done to Russia and its people. They deserve much better.”
