Congresswoman Ann Kirkpatrick

Representing the 1st District of Arizona

Jobs and the Economy

Arizona’s been in a boom-and-bust cycle for too long.  My vision for this district is that of a diversified, stable economy not dependent on just one sector. District One has an opportunity to create jobs in emerging technologies like biotech, wind and solar; jobs tied to our natural resources; and jobs that strengthen our education system and help our kids compete in a global economy.

Our mostly rural district includes the Grand Canyon, an environmental treasure that is also an economic driver. Our working families rely on industries such as mining, national parks and public lands. District One is also home to major transportation corridors including federal highways, railroads, pipelines and water resources. The need for infrastructure in rural Arizona is significant, particularly on the Navajo Nation and throughout tribal communities. Modernizing our infrastructure will create and project jobs in District One and give these communities the tools to build long-term economic stability.

This week, the National Park Service turns 100, and everyone’s invited to the party. You can skip the birthday cake and just take a hike — literally.

During its 100th birthday week, each of the National Park Service’s 412 parks is waiving admission fees (find a park and more info at www.nps.gov).

In Arizona, we are fortunate to have 22 national parks, including the crown jewel of the National Park Service, the Grand Canyon National Park. In my Flagstaff community, the Grand Canyon is our favorite neighbor.

With an effort in Congress to scale back veteran preference in federal hiring awaiting action by a House-Senate conference committee, a former top personnel official says there’s a better plan.

Jeffrey Neal, who was in charge of hiring for the Department of Homeland Security until he retired in 2011, says a Senate proposal to limit veteran preference to a single use is flawed because it does not take into account former service members’ high job turnover.

Nearly two months after President Obama tapped Judge Merrick Garland to fill the vacancy on the U.S. Supreme Court, the Senate has failed to schedule so much as a hearing on his nomination.

The Senate taking a long time to get something done is hardly noteworthy. What is shocking, however, is how boldly and unapologetically Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and other Republican lawmakers have declared their intention to put politics before the functioning of the Supreme Court.

For three months, Senate Democrats have hammered their Republican counterparts over their refusal to take up President Obama’s Supreme Court nominee. Now House Democrats are looking to do some hammering of their own.

House Democrats hoping to win Senate seats have jumped into the Supreme Court standoff , introducing a bill to force the Senate to stay in session over the summer if it does not consider President Barack Obama's Supreme Court nominee .

The bill introduced Wednesday would prohibit Congress from adjourning for the summer if the Senate does not hold a hearing on the nominee , Judge Merrick Garland, by July 19. Congress is set to be out of session for the Republican and Democratic presidential conventions in July and to take the entire month of August off.
