Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen released the following statement on the shooting that killed at least five police officers and wounded several others in Dallas:
"Our hearts break for the police and transit officers killed and wounded in Dallas, their families, and the entire community which just wanted to peacefully exercise its right to free speech. This heinous act against those who face danger every day should unite all Americans to bring the perpetrators to justice and take urgent action to confront hate and gun violence in America."
Today Congressmen Chris Van Hollen, Elijah E. Cummings, Dutch Ruppersberger, and John Sarbanes (all D-MD) marked the National Day of Action for Commonsense Gun Violence Prevention at Cathedral of the Incarnation in Baltimore. The Representatives were joined by Maryland Attorney General Brian Frosh, Baltimore Police Commissioner Kevin Davis, Baltimore City Health Commissioner Dr. Leana Wen, survivors of gun violence, families of victims, and faith leaders.

“As we continue to mourn those we lost in Orlando, we must focus as a nation on what can be done to prevent the next massacre on innocent Americans. Strategies to reduce violence and make it harder for those who wish to cause terror are not new – we could vote and pass legislation today. But common sense reforms have been repeatedly blocked by those in Congress who are quick to hold moments of silence, then turn their backs on communities that have endured horrific bloodshed and are crying out for action.

Today Congressman Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) joined Congressman Steny Hoyer (D-MD) and the National Capital Region Delegation in hosting a meeting on Capitol Hill with Paul Wiedefeld, the General Manager and Chief Executive Officer of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), to discuss Metro’s proposed SafeTrack plan which will address maintenance and rehabilitation efforts of the rail system. This is the second delegation meeting with Mr. Wiedefeld since he joined Metro in November 2015.
