At long last, it’s election day! On Wednesday morning we will start looking forward to swearing in new members of the Senate and inaugurating a new President. Since the results won’t be in until tonight, I don’t yet know who our new President will be, or whether I’ll be serving in the majority or the minority in the new Senate in January.

What I do know is that I will sustain and support whomever is elected as my new President. If my Party’s nominee does not prevail and Hillary Clinton is elected, I will assume the best and look for the good, knowing that some of the toughest issues we face as a country are best tackled with divided government, where both parties share the political risk, hold hands and jump together.

I will take my role with regard to advice and consent seriously. This does not mean I will arbitrarily block from consideration those who are qualified to serve, nor will I encourage my colleagues to engage in perpetual hearings, investigations and inquiries into the conduct of those who may have bested us in this election.

We face serious challenges ahead both domestically and abroad. Fortunately, we have a wonderful, durable system here, and we need to trust in our institutions. Today of all days, it’s great to live in America.
