WASHINGTON, D.C. –Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez (CA-46), released the following statement in response to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s travel warning to areas in Florida where the Zika virus has spread:

“I’m deeply concerned about the looming threat of the Zika virus spreading in vulnerable regions of the United States, especially in light of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s travel warning for a Miami neighborhood where 15 cases of the Zika virus have apparently been spread through local mosquito-borne transmission. Along with this development, the National Institute for Health will reportedly run out of their reallocated Ebola funds for researching and treating Zika by the end of this month. This alarming and dangerous new stage in Zika’s spread in the United States demands action.

“We have the ability and duty to protect the American people from the Zika virus—and must take swift, appropriate action. We can’t afford to play politics with public health and safety.  Time is of the essence—Congress has the power to stop this.  This is a public health crisis here in the United States, we must take action.”
