REP. LORETTA SANCHEZ APPLAUDS SUPREME COURT DECISION ON WHOLE WOMAN’S HEALTH V. HELLERSTEDT

WASHINGTON, D.C. –Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez (CA-46) released the following statement after the Supreme Court ruled 5-3 in Whole Women’s Health v. Hellerstedt, reversing the 5th Circuit’s previous decision and rejecting Texas’ efforts to undermine a woman’s constitutionally protected right to make her own health care decisions:

“Along with countless women breathing a sigh of relief across America, I applaud the Supreme Court for decisively protecting a woman’s right to choose.

“HB2 has jeopardized Texas women’s health by drastically limiting their access to safe and legal abortions. Thankfully in today’s decision in firmly reversing the 5th Circuit’s previous ruling, the Justices saw through Texas’ insidious smoke and mirrors attempt to take away a woman’s right to make her own health care decisions.  

“While this decision is a victory for women, it’s a chilling victory all the same. We’re living in a grim new normal of increasing and unyielding malicious attacks on women’s health in Congress and in State legislatures. We’ve won this fight, but we must remain vigilant to protect women’s access to contraception and their constitutionally-protected right to choose.”
