Foreign Affairs
As a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, I am working to represent Wisconsin’s interests abroad and address many of the significant foreign policy challenges facing the United States. In addition to combating terrorism, supporting global security and human rights, and addressing global health concerns, I look forward to representing Wisconsin’s interests regarding international trade with a seat on the Terrorism, Nonproliferation, and Trade Subcommittee.
As a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, I am working to represent Wisconsin’s interests abroad and address many of the significant foreign policy challenges facing the U.S. In addition to looking at efforts to combat terrorism, support global security and human rights, and address global health concerns, I look forward to representing Wisconsin’s interests regarding international trade with a seat on the Terrorism, Nonproliferation, and Trade Subcommittee.
Terrorism
Over the past decade, the U.S. has faced a number of significant terror threats, and countering global terrorism continues to be one of our most significant foreign policy challenges. I believe that we must be cognizant of national security threats and must consider necessary efforts to keep every American safe. As a member of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Terrorism, Nonproliferation, and Trade, I am directly involved in much of Congress’ work to combat terrorism around the globe.
The threat of groups like the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) has grown over the past few months. I condemn the horrendous actions of ISIS militants, and I am very concerned about the threat ISIS presents in the region. In the last Congress, I supported legislation that sought to cut off ISIS’s financing through sanctions on foreign financial institutions. I will continue working on the Committee to find the best way forward to defeat ISIS and other extremist groups around the globe.
Security in the Middle East
The Middle East remains a highly volatile region, with a number of security threats to our allies and our own national security.
I am committed to ensuring that Israel remains a strong and free democracy in the Middle East, and a strong ally of the United States. I also believe that we must continue to work with both the Israelis and the Palestinians to facilitate lasting peace. The threats presented in the region are continually evolving, so it is imperative that we resolve this conflict in a comprehensive manner.
Additionally, I believe now, more than ever, Congress should be conducting aggressive oversight on U.S. foreign policy towards Iran. Iran becoming a nuclear power could have a devastating impact on our national security and our allies in the region, and the U.S. must do all it can to prevent that from happening. With this in mind, it is important that we enforce existing laws intended to limit Iran's ability to acquire nuclear weapons.
I will continue working on the House Foreign Affairs Committee to ensure that U.S. actions result in a stable Middle East that does not threaten the U.S. or our vital interests.
Ukraine & Eastern Europe
As Vice Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Europe, Eurasia, and Emerging Threats, I will continue to support efforts to help protect the sovereignty of Ukraine and other countries in the region.
I remain very concerned about the current situation in Ukraine and the actions of Russia in the region. I believe it is important for Congress to express its support for Ukraine while making its concerns known regarding Russia’s actions.
