Education

As the first in my family to graduate college, I understand the opportunities provided by a quality education. And as the parent of three children who attended schools in the Clark County School District, I believe we must provide teachers, schools, and administrators the resources they need to ensure student success. When working in Nevada I make it a point to get out and visit local schools so I can hear directly from teachers, administrators, and students about what is and isn't working for them. Those conversations help guide my decision making in Washington as a member of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce. From strengthening K-12 education to making higher education more affordable and accessible, improving education will lead to stronger communities and a healthier economy.

IN THE NEWS -- Schools will begin to track students from military families

Schools across the country are preparing to formally track students from military families, monitoring their academic progress as they move from military base to military base and state to state, under a new provision in the federal education law. The change comes in response to concerns raised by the Department of Defense that the children of active-duty members of the Army, Navy, Coast Guard, Air Force and Marines have academic and emotional needs that schools often are ill-equipped to meet. PRESS RELEASE -- Heck Backs House Passage of Education Overhaul

WASHINGTON - Congressman Joe Heck (NV-03), a member of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, today backed House passage of S. 1177, the Every Student Succeeds Act, which represents a major overhaul of federal education policy.

"The federal government's one-size-fits-all approach to education ends with passage of this bill," Rep. Heck said."Parents, teachers, and local school administrators know best what our students need to succeed. This bill will improve education outcomes for our students by taking control from federal bureaucrats and returning it to the people who actually work in our classrooms and interact with students. The policies in this bill empower parents to make education decisions that are best for their children and will improve education in Nevada and around the nation." Read more here.

PRESS RELEASE -- Reps. Heck, Grijalva Introduce Bill to Protect CTE Funding

A “hold harmless” provision in the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act of 2006, under which CTE programs are funded, ensures that states do not receive less funding than the baseline established in 1998. However, states such as Nevada and Arizona, which have seen rapid population growth since 1998, are facing disproportionate cuts to CTE funding and will not be able to adequately fund their CTE programs on 1998 levels. Despite the importance of preparing high school and college students for in-demand jobs, funding for CTE programs continues to decrease due to sluggish economic growth and the consequences of sequestration. As the United States continues to diversify its economy to keep pace in a rapidly changing global marketplace, we will need a well-educated, highly trained workforce to fill the jobs of the future. Promoting and expanding access to career and technical education will help ensure students are career- or college-ready and that we have a workforce ready to fill the jobs of today and tomorrow.
