Retirement Security (Social Security & Medicare)

For far too long, Washington has found a place for its involvement in the lives of Americans where it doesn’t belong.  By doing so, it has discouraged personal responsibility.

It is time for the U.S. to revise the way it deals with its long-term obligations.  According to the independent Congressional Budget Office, after years of irresponsible management, Social Security is now in a state of perpetual deficits.  In the next ten years alone, annual Social Security deficits will range between $28 billion and $120 billion.  And over the next 75 years, Social Security has a projected $5.4 trillion unfunded liability. If we continue to stand idly by, we not only hurt Social Security, but also add to our nearly $17 trillion debt.

The time to strengthen and save Social Security is now. Every year that we wait, the harder it becomes to make the system solvent for our children and grandchildren. While we have an obligation to fulfill the mission of retirement security promised to our current and near retirees, we have an equal obligation to ensure today’s younger workers have certainty while making their retirement plans.

Medicare also needs strengthening and saving. Recent House budgets offered some bold reforms of Medicare, one of which is to create a competitive marketplace for future Medicare beneficiaries that encourages competition and therefore leads to lower costs.  By acting now, we can save and secure Medicare for generations to come.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Tim Huelskamp (KS-01) has cosponsored H.R. 1397, the Seniors’ Tax Simplification Act. Huelskamp has long held that a flatter, simpler, fairer tax code would boost the American economy and benefit families and individuals. He contends that a shorter and more straightforward tax code would also reduce the amount people pay for tax preparation.

McPherson Sentinel: Huelskamp expresses concern about U.S. debt, entitlements

April 9, 2013

Rep. Tim Huelskamp, R-Kan., emphasized the need for federal debt reduction during a town hall stop Friday in McPherson.

We are going on four-straight years of more than trillion dollar debt, he said. It is going to be worse unless we make a change. We have a debt already that has us under a crushing burden of red ink.

Facts Are Stubborn Things

By: Congressman Tim Huelskamp

A Salina man recently submitted a column to several Kansas newspapers criticizing a recent health care update that I mailed to my constituents. As John Adams once said, "Facts are stubborn things," so let me respond to the many inaccurate claims in the column.

Happy Mother s Day yesterday to all Moms, Grandmothers, and women who help raise the next generation. Thank you for all that you do, more often than not without public praise and recognition. I would like to offer a special recognition of my mom, my wife, Angela, and the birthmothers of our four children.
