Ribble Urges IRS to Increase Identity Theft Victim Support

Washington, DC--U.S. Representative Reid Ribble (WI-08) today led 29 Members of Congress in a letter urging the IRS to provide additional credit monitoring services for taxpayers who were exposed in an IRS data breach.

"We have plenty of concerns with the IRS as it is--data breaches and insufficient credit monitoring following identity theft should not be one of them," Ribble said. "Recently, I heard from a Northeast Wisconsinite who was the victim of identity theft due to an IRS data breach and was disappointed to find that the IRS offered only one year of credit monitoring--not enough to protect him in the future.   The IRS must increase its security to keep our data safe, and in the event of a breach, it should take additional action to provide credit monitoring for those affected."

The letter, which can be read here, urges the IRS to increase support to victims of identity theft due to IRS data breaches.
