There’s an old saying about what makes something newsworthy: If a dog bites a man, it’s not news. If a man bites a dog, now there’s a story.

In politics, that means we must endure endless cable TV coverage of reckless candidates like Donald Trump, whose remarks are contrived to inflame fears or offend sensibilities. And he isn’t the only one. Politicians in Washington, desperate for attention, spend much of their time picking fights and placing blame.

With all that noise, it would’ve been easy to miss some of the good news Arizona got in 2015.

People too dangerous to fly are too dangerous to buy guns and explosives. Makes sense, right? Not to Washington politicians. 

Congress is too afraid of the gun lobby to fix a dangerous loophole known as the "Terror Gap," and as a result, the FBI lacks authority to block firearm and explosives sales to terror suspects. It's a total failure of leadership when, even in post-9/11 times, lobbyists are calling the shots about keeping America safe.

The warm glow of candlelight will fill the Flagstaff City Hall lawn this evening.

The event, which was organized by various Flagstaff citizens, faith leaders and civic groups, is part of the Newtown Foundation’s third annual nationwide vigil to honor victims of gun violence, including the 20 children and six adults slaughtered by a gunman at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. on Dec. 14, 2012.
