Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick visited the NAU campus over the weekend to discuss a grant she helped secure for NAU from the National Science Foundation.

The grant is for $525,000 and will take effect in May. Kirkpatrick says the grant will go towards research and to develop software that will facilitate collaboration between research projects at NAU.

FLAGSTAFF – U.S. Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick, D-Ariz., is pleased to announce that Northern Arizona University will receive a $525,725 research award from the National Science Foundation.

The award, which takes effect in May, provides $525,725 to fund the development of interactive software that will allow researchers to collaborate and share information to advance the study of microbes and microbiomes. This collaboration will dramatically increase the ability of researchers to classify and study one of the most abundant forms of life on Earth, single-cellular organisms.

Last winter alone, schoolkids in one Navajo Nation district missed 10 days of school because the dirt road that is their only route to school became impassable due to mud. Annually, Navajo students miss an average of 12 school days – what the federal government considers “chronic absenteeism” – just because their school bus routes are impassable.
