House Democrats hoping to win Senate seats have jumped into the Supreme Court standoff , introducing a bill to force the Senate to stay in session over the summer if it does not consider President Barack Obama's Supreme Court nominee .

The bill introduced Wednesday would prohibit Congress from adjourning for the summer if the Senate does not hold a hearing on the nominee , Judge Merrick Garland, by July 19. In the letter, Kirkpatrick and Grijalva note that tribal communities are “among the most at-risk for tick- and mosquito-borne diseases” and that the Indian Health Service (IHS) lacks “the staffing or resources to undertake needed control operations.”

Navajo farmer Martha Curtis was planning to sell organic vegetables and melons to schools last summer when the Gold King Mine pollution drifting downstream from Colorado turned the San Juan River orange.

Fearing poisoned crops, the Navajos dried up irrigation ditches for three weeks.

Curtis and her husband, both retired in Upper Fruitland, New Mexico, lost everything on their 4 acres except for a few ears of corn that she still hasn’t had the heart to pick.

“It hurts,” Curtis said.
