The Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as Obamacare, has helped millions of Americans get medical coverage. Thanks to this coverage, Americans are seeing doctors, getting diagnoses, receiving treatments, and living better and healthier lives. The ACA works – it is saving money and lives.

The open enrollment period for the Affordable Care Act starts this Sunday, November 1, and ends January 31 of next year. This means that everyone, those with coverage and those without, can review and sign up for a health care plan for 2016.

If you don’t have health insurance in 2016, you will have to pay a fine of at least $625. However, there is a great chance that you are eligible for a tax credit to help pay for your coverage.

If you do have coverage, it’s important to update your information to ensure you get an accurate assessment of your eligibility for a tax credit, and to make sure you have chosen the best plan for you.

Here’s how you can sign up for a new plan in 2016.

  • Online: visit www.HealthCare.Gov or www.CuidadodeSalud.Gov to enroll, shop, and find out if you will receive financial assistance to help you afford the cost of your care. There are separate sections for those who already have insurance and those who are getting it for the first time.
  • By Phone: call a customer service representative, who will walk you through the application and enrollment process at 1-800-318-2596. Customer service representatives are available in English and Spanish.
  • In Person: visit LocalHelp.HealthCare.Gov  to find certified help from individuals and organizations in your area.
  • By Mail: print an application, available online here  and drop it in the mail.

Millions of Americans are already taking advantage of the ACA’s benefits. I hope you will too.

Thank you for your interest in attending one of our nation’s service academies.

In order to be considered for an appointment to a United States service academy, each applicant must obtain a nomination from an authorized nominating source. These include the President, Vice President, U.S. Senators, and/or Congressional Representative.

To receive a nomination from our office, applicants must complete a nomination file, which includes: a completed application form, high school transcripts, ACT/SAT scores, an essay, a current photo, and three letters of recommendation. A committee, composed of service academies alumni, will review each file and schedule interviews with the top candidates. After the interviews are conducted, the committee recommends which candidates are best qualified to receive a nomination and our office submits those nominations to the respective academies.

For more details about the nomination process and additional requirements, please download our Congressional Nominations Information Packet. You can also review our page of Frequently Asked Questions.

To apply for a nomination, click here.

If you have any additional questions, please contact our office at 407-615-8889.

Best wishes to you as you pursue your goal of attending one of the U.S. service academies and serving our country.

June 1st marks the start of the 2014 hurricane season. Before the season begins, please make sure that you are prepared for the possibility of a tropical storm or hurricane. Storm systems can change quickly and unexpectedly, so preparation is the best way to avoid injury or damage to property. Here are a few tips to help you prepare:

  • Monitor weather conditions, and follow directions from state and local officials. Get up-to-date advisories on storms impacting Central Florida and your local community at www.FloridaDisaster.Org. For the latest information on weather, including advisories, tracking maps, and satellite and radar images, visit the National Hurricane Center at www.NHC.NOAA.Gov.
  • Know your evacuation route, and follow evacuation orders from local officials immediately. Learn more at www.Ready.Gov/Evacuating-Yourself-and-Your-Family.
  • Create an emergency plan, and have an emergency contact number for someone out-of-state, who knows where you are in the event of an emergency. Learn more at www.Ready.Gov/Make-a-Plan.
  • Know your local emergency contact information. We’ve compiled a list of our local, state, and federal government contacts below, for your reference.
  • Build an emergency supply kit, which includes essential items to help you and your family survive for at least 72 hours after a hurricane. Find a checklist in www.Ready.Gov/Build-A-Kit. Your emergency supplies kit should include items such as:
    • Water (one gallon of water per-person, per-day, for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation, is recommended) and food (at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food, as well as a can-opener)
    • Portable, battery-powered radio or television with extra batteries, flashlight, matches in a waterproof container, signal flare, and fire extinguisher
    • First aid kit, first aid manual (available at www.ready.gov), and a supply of prescription medicines
    • Extra set of car keys, credit card and cash, as well as personal identification, insurance policy paperwork, and other important family documents
    • Map of your area and Family Disaster Plan
    • Special items for infants, such as formula and diapers
    • Pet food and extra water for your pet
    • Dust mask (to help filter contaminated air), plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place
    • Wet wipes, garbage bags, and plastic ties for personal sanitation
  • Talk to your insurance agent about flood insurance, and review your homeowner’s policy. To learn more about your risk and flood insurance, visit www.FloodSmart.Gov.
