Have you all heard about Andrew Brunson, a pastor being held captive in Turkey? He and his wife were held in isolation by police for 13 days, supposedly for being a "national security risk." The Turkish refused to let them contact American consular authorities and only released Noreen, Andrew's wife, last Wednesday. Andrew is still being held captive and currently, there are serious concerns about his safety.

Turkish police authorities holding an American Protestant couple in isolation for the past 13 days released the wife late last night (Oct. 19), but continue to hold her husband incommunicado in an Izmir detention facility.

This week the Iraqi forces (bolstered by U.S. forces) are advancing towards Mosul, to recapture it from ISIS. Last week the Philadelphia Inquirer published a piece I wrote about the urgent situation the civilians there are facing as they try to escape the fighting → bit.ly/MosulCivilians

By Joe Pitts ISIS is popular. It has drawn followers from the United Kingdom, France, Germany, the United States, and Asia. Those teetering on the edge of society or questioning the level of their religious devotion are drawn to the group like a drowning victim to air. The purity of their goal to cr...

Yesterday, Britain Prime Minister Theresa May announced her goal for Great Britain to formally exit the European Union by the end of March. Some feel that it's too fast, some feel that it's too slow. Find out what that means for everyone here >> http://wapo.st/2dzaHIK

Have you heard about the White House's request for more ground troops in Iraq? They are preparing to undergird Iraqi forces to retake the city of Mosul, to the North of Baghdad.

ISIS captured Mosul two years ago. What is your opinion-- do you believe retaking Mosul will set ISIS back significantly, or do you think the war against the terrorist group is primarily a war on their violent ideology?

The U.S. military has asked the White House to deploy up to 500 additional troops to Iraq to assist in the U.S.-led coalition campaign to retake Mosul from the Islamic State, according to U.S. officia

Yesterday New York officials arrested a man named Ahmad Khan Rahami who they say planted bombs in New Jersey and New York over the weekend. They found him sleeping in the doorway of a bar Monday morning. When a policeman asked Ahmad to show his hands, thinking his beard looked like the bombing suspect's, Ahmad shot the officer in the abdomen. Did you all hear about the Government Accountability Office's inspection of the Obamacare exchanges and its successful registering of fake identities? Today we're holding a hearing to examine this problem and more with the ACA. Tune into the hearing live here: http://bit.ly/ACAshakyground

Good morning! Today the subcommittee that I chair, the Health Subcommittee, will mark up five bills related to public health.

As you probably already know, whenever a member of the House introduces a bill, it is referred to one or more committees. Within that committee, the bill is then referred to a subcommittee. The subcommittee will then hold a "mark up" where they review the bill and vote on any revisions they want to make. That's what my subcommittee is doing today.

If y...ou'd like to watch the markup process today, tune into the live feed at bit.ly/2cULndz

We're scheduled to review: H.R. 4365 Protecting Patient Access to Emergency Medications Act of 2016;
H.R. 1192 National Diabetes Clinical Care Commission Act;
H.R. 1209 Improving Access to Maternity Care Act;
H.R. 1877 Mental Health First Aid; and
H.R. 2713 Title VIII Nursing Workforce Reauthorization Act of 2015.

Did you all hear about the uproar last week over Mylan raising the price of its EpiPen? On the Health Subcommittee, which I chair, we were especially concerned with the sudden price increase. We worried that people could die because they would delay or forgo buying the lifesaving injector because of the high cost.

As Health Subcommittee Chairman, I signed onto a letter with some of my colleagues to the FDA asking if there are any generic versions to Mylan's EpiPen waiting for approval and if so, why have they not yet been approved.

Additionally, yesterday Mylan announced that it would sell a half-priced generic version of its EpiPen. Read more here>>> http://cnnmon.ie/2bPwqLg

Competition is coming in the EpiPen controversy -- from Mylan itself. The company that makes EpiPen surprised analysts on Monday by announcing plans to launch a generic version of the allergy treatment at a 50% discount.

'Have you seen the Capitol dome lately? This is what it looks like today. The Architect of the Capitol has been working to restore it since January 2014. Believe it or not, this picture actually shows a substantial amount of progress! (Funny for Congress, right? :) )

Over the years (the dome was constructed during the Civil War!), rust has seeped beneath the surface and created cracks in the dome's exterior. Those cracks have allowed water to creep into the beautiful interior of the dome, which is painted with a beautiful mural by Italian artist Constantino Brumidi.

The scaffolding in this photo used to stretch all the way to the top of Lady Liberty's torch, and only recently have workers finished the uppermost portion. So far, the restoration looks great! The exterior top of the dome appears shiny and new. Looking forward to seeing the rest of it by the 2017 Presidential Inauguration, the project's estimated finish date.'
'On July 30, 1956, President Eisenhower signed legislation making "In God We Trust" our official national motto. Today marks its 60th anniversary!

So today, let us look back on that moment and reaffirm our commitment to trust in God for our country's future.

Proverbs 19:21 states, "Many are the plans in a person's heart, but it is the LORD's purpose that prevails"-- may we all live in the confidence of that truth.'
'This week I had to say goodbye to one of the best legislative clerks my subcommittee has ever had, Graham Pittman. Graham has worked tirelessly for me on the Health Subcommittee for the past year, and he is now leaving to attend law school at the University of Virginia. Congratulations Graham on this exciting new endeavor, I wish you all the best.

Thanks for all your hard work!'
