Congratulations to Lynn Kim who received The Congressional Award Silver Medal! The Congressional Award is the United States Congress’ award for young Americans. As part of the program, Lynn volunteered over 250 hours at a local homeless shelter. Visit congressionalaward.org to learn how students can participate and earn a Congressional Award.

One of my favorite jobs as your Congressman is to recognize the top graduating seniors in the 34th District including the outstanding students from Downtown Magnets High School, Edward R. Roybal Learning Center, Los Angeles Leadership Academy, Alliance College-Ready Academy HS, and Oscar De La Hoya Animo Charter High School. These bright students seen here from Oscar De La Hoya are ready to reach even greater heights. Congratulations!

They grow up so fast: Osmin Zelaya (left) and Eric Alejo are former participants of my annual Student Art Competition and part of UCLA Community School’s Class of 2015. In the fall, Osmin will attend San Francisco State University and Eric will attend CSU East Bay. I can’t wait to see what they accomplish. Congratulations!

It’s a pleasure to congratulate remarkable students like Jasmin Beltran, a graduating senior from the School of Business and Tourism at Miguel Contreras Learning Complex. In the fall, Jasmin will attend UC Berkeley as a Regents’ and Chancellor’s Scholar to study political science. She plans to pursue a career in public service. Jasmin, you are off to an excellent start.

Every year I’m proud to nominate top students from my congressional district to attend our military service academies. Congratulations to Marvin Vestil (U.S. Air Force Academy), Richard Kang (U.S. Naval Academy), Charlie Kim (U.S. Naval Academy), and Pierson Ro (West Point) who will attend these fine institutions and become outstanding leaders for America.

It’s great to have VA Secretary McDonald in Los Angeles. I thank each and every one of the folks from the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles (HACLA) for what they do with the resources they have. There are a lot of families who but for the grace of the work HACLA does would find themselves homeless. It’s a simple idea. Bring VA and HACLA staff together in one location to cut through the bureaucracy and get it done for Americans who got it done for us.

The Department of Justice did the right thing asking the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals to allow the President to proceed with implementation of his lawful immigration actions.

There are countless thousands of workers who intend to go in next week to work, to protect our homeland. They may still have to go in to work, but they may not get paid for doing that. That’s not right.

I’m excited to participate in the groundbreaking on a new 6th street bridge which will make LA’s landscape shine even brighter. I’m proud that this project, funded in part by federal tax dollars, will benefit local workers especially our veterans here in Los Angeles.
